Making SENSE of Bible Object Lessons
What is a Bible Object Lesson?
Bible object lessons are simply:
- an illustration given using a material object
- a story with an object that makes the abstract – concrete
As teachers we use object lessons to illustrate biblical principles to our kids. Object lessons a must have tool in our kids Bible lessons. Kids can visualize and understand God’s Word. Bible object lessons make God’s word “click”.

Here Comes the Prop Man
I was called the “Prop Man” in the church where I served on staff for over 20 years. I always used object lessons to illustrate key points in my adult or kids Bible lessons.
I would show up carrying bags and boxes of props to use. Everyone knew I was teaching that day!

You know what, even those boxes and bags held people’s interest.
To see those containers on the sanctuary platform or in the classroom beside me piqued interest.
What’s he got in there? What’s he going to do today?
Props work whether you actually take them out or not!
The Prop Man Humbled
Here’s a funny but true story about me – the Prop Man.
One of my preschool teachers was teaching a Kickrickulum Psalm 23 kids Bible lesson.
She sent some kids to get me in my office. They told me my reign had come to an end.
How could that be? Object lessons ‘R me! I walked into the classroom to find a pen with two LIVE lambs in it!
Suddenly all my Bible object lessons seemed silly!
Her lesson was on Jesus our shepherd. She lived on a farm and brought two of her soft little fluffy lambs to beautifully illustrate the lesson point.
WOW! I was humbled – how do you top that?
Even today I still consider it a sheep shot!
Jesus Used Object Lessons!
What? Yeah – He totally did.
Let’s face it, some of the disciples weren’t all that sharp. They were simple men and at times, dull of understanding.
Jesus used the objects around Him to help them understand His concepts and principles.
The More Senses the More Sense!
Say What? The more senses you incorporate in your kids Bible lessons the more the lesson will make sense! Let’s take a look at a few.
See

Eye will start with seeing. Yeah eye know…like eye said, eye like puns so don’t lash out at me because of it.
I’m a visual learner. I can grasp something much easier if you tell me AND show me! Click here for an idea you’ll want to “save”.
Taste
Kids love snacks. Why not treat them during your kids Bible lesson? If you can tie it in to your lesson even better. Now… having said that – it isn’t as easy as it used to be. It seems like allergies are more prevalent now and continue to increase. You have to be aware of allergies in your classroom and fully aware of guidelines in your particular ministry.
But for now, we’ll tag this onto our salvation object lesson above for a real mouthful!

Touch

It’s time to stay “in touch” with your kids. So let me touch on that (Okay I will stop now). Kid’s love to use their hands. Let them carry, hold or feel something. Touch is all about being hands on.
